Native Plant Nursery Technician

The SAMO Fund native plant nursery in Newbury Park is currently hiring a full-time Native Plant Nursery Technician to aid in native seed collections, propagation and growing of thousands of native plants, and connecting native nature to various volunteer groups and communities across Southern California.

Candidates should:

  • Possess a positive work and team attitude, timeliness, and willingness to learn and contribute to overall team goals

  • Demonstrate interest or experience in any of the following areas: California native plants, restoration/ conservation, botany, environmental horticulture, organic and/or community gardening, permaculture, and traditional ecological knowledge

  • Have a high level of attention to detail, ability to solve problems, and good communication skills

This position is for Spring 2025 for up to 3 full years. Compensation $22.05 hourly.

Milkweed and Monarch Technician (SFV and Santa Monica Mountains)

The SAMO Fund native plant nursery in Newbury Park is currently hiring one part-time Native Milkweed and Monarch technician to help connect communities in the San Fernando Valley to local flora and fauna. The Milkweed and Monarch technician will help grow, maintain and distribute thousands of native milkweed plants across the San Fernando Valley. Come join us as we help restore urban areas in the San Fernando Valley!

Additional Duties:

  • Helping to collect and clean seed of the 3 species of native milkweeds found in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

  • Co-leading the organization of various community gatherings, plant giveaways and classes to educate the public about the benefits of using local milkweed and other native plants

  • Occasionally aiding with native plant nursery and restoration projects as needed

  • Documenting and reporting on new plant giveaways, and contacting and reporting on status of previous plant giveaways (gardens)

Applications will be accepted from January 24th, 2025 to April 15th, 2025, or until the position is filled.  Interviews will be conducted beginning in February, on a rolling basis, until positions are filled.

Native Seed Technician

Santa Monica Mountains Fund, the official partner of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area,
is seeking Biological Science Technicians to work with restoration-related projects with a focus on native
seed restoration and implementation of a Native Seed Production Site. This project seeks to increase the
availability of locally sourced native seed for restoration within the park and create a large seed bank for
future restoration projects.

Employment will consist of 40 hours of work per week, from August 2025 – July 2026. Much of the work
will take place Wednesday through Saturday. The position will be paid at a rate of $17.56 - $22.05/hr.,
depending on experience and education.

Restoration Technician

Santa Monica Mountains Fund is hiring technicians to support habitat restoration and invasive
plant control work on public lands in the Santa Monica Mountains and Ventura County Region.
Become a part of a restoration team and help restore damaged natural areas. This is a one-year
position starting September/October 2025. Join us to help restore the country's largest urban national park!

Technicians will serve as part of a crew performing restoration duties, including invasive plant
control. Duties include:

• Identify unknown plant specimens using dichotomous keys or herbarium collections
• Assist the park's nursery manager in plant propagation and native nursery operations
• Maintain legible and accurate work notes, data and records for use by supervisor or third
party
• Lead and/or provide guidance to volunteers during restoration events
• Assist the restoration ecologist in advertising and coordinating restoration volunteer events

Native Plant Restoration Internship

Learn about native plant restoration and ecology while gaining valuable hands-on field experience by joining the native plant nursery team at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area!

This internship is designed to allow participants to explore a variety of aspects within Southern California native plant restoration. Interns will gain experience working in a variety of plant communities including southern oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, grassland, riparian woodland, chaparral, and more. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of restoration duties.


The schedule will be 3 days a week (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) from 7am – 3:30pm. The internship
will have two cohorts; the first running from May 29, 2025 through September 20, 2025 and the second from June 5, 2025 through October 25, 2025.

February.
A stipend may be available (pending funding).
